if you've had enough of trump, congress and the "news" media, then raise your hand

had enough of trump, congress and the "news" media?

don't you think that it's about time to do something about it?

who do you trust?
   - someone who has values similar to yours?
   - someone who doesn't?
   - or political parties, financed by billionaire corporations and
     PACs

Here's how government is controlled in the US:

If you vote for a republican or a democrat, then it's not the person that you voted for who is in control--it's the party.

In the next election--national, state or local--vote for anyone except a democrat or a republican.
Soon the republican and democratic parties will die.
Nothing will be better for the United States of America.

the same can be said for biased "news" media that are short on news and long on opinion, e.g. cnn, fox news, newspapers, internet, etc. if we refuse to support biased "news" media, and the junk that they pass off for news, then they'll shrivel up and die. nothing can be better for us and for the USA.

presidential pardons: 1789 to the present

"The pardon power was controversial from the outset; many Anti-Federalists remembered examples of royal abuses of the pardon power in Europe, and warned that the same would happen in the new republic. Critics[who?] argue that pardons have been used more often for the sake of political expediency than to correct judicial error.
In the 20th century, President Gerald Ford infamously pardoned former President Richard Nixon on September 8, 1974, for official misconduct which gave rise to the Watergate scandal.[13] Polls showed a majority of Americans disapproved of the pardon, and Ford's public-approval ratings tumbled afterward.[14] Other controversial uses of the pardon power include Jimmy Carter's grant of amnesty to Vietnam-era draft dodgers on his second day in office, January 21, 1977,[15] George H. W. Bush's pardons of 75 people, including six Reagan administration officials accused or convicted in connection with the Iran–Contra affair, and Bill Clinton's commutation of sentences for 16 members of FALN in 1999.
In the 21st century, Clinton's pardons of 140 people on his last day in office, January 20, 2001, including billionaire fugitive Marc Rich and his own brother, Roger Clinton, were heavily criticized. President Donald Trump issued his first pardon to former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio on August 25, 2017. Arpaio had been convicted of criminal contempt in federal court. Trump's pardon was met with widespread criticism, and was relatively unusual because it was issued early in Trump's presidency." [16]

trump's 3-ring circus

is trump deliberately trying to create a p t barnum 3-ring circus?
it looks that way.

trump the lions' (democrats, enemies, etc.) tamer in one ring,
trump the elephants' (republicans?) tamer in the other,
the rest of the world (congress, media, allies, etc.) in the center ring,
and daredevil aerialists (kim jong un, putin, iran, china, etc.) overhead.

there are a lot of similarities between trump and p t barnum

Phineas Taylor "P. T.Barnum (July 5, 1810 – April 7, 1891) was an American politician, showman, and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me", and his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers".

Barnum wrote several books, including Life of P.T. Barnum (1854), The Humbugs of the World(1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and The Art of Money-Getting (1880).
One of Barnum's more successful methods of self-promotion was mass publication of his autobiography. Barnum eventually gave up his copyright to allow other printers to sell inexpensive editions. At the end of the 19th century the number of copies printed was second only to the New Testament in North America.
Often referred to as the "Prince of Humbugs," Barnum saw nothing wrong in entertainers or vendors using hype (or "humbug",  as he termed it) in promotional material, as long as the public was getting value for money.

to fix our broken government voters need to vote for candidates other than republicans and democrats

Trump, McConnell relationship sinking to new low - CNNPolitics

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper questions Trump's fitness for office

our government has been broken for decades.
republicans fight with democrats and visa versa.
trump fights with everyone--democrats, republicans, even members of his own staff that he selected.
the solution to our broken government is for voters to vote for candidates other than republicans and democrats.

lessons from a lightning bolt

exactly one week ago today,
almost to the hour,
before charlottesville,
before barcelona,
before mid-august when kim jong un threatened to direct missiles at Guam,
and before trump's tweets of the past week,
the house that we are renting was struck by a lightning bolt.
13"x6"x2" deep hole in the 8" thick
poured concrete foundation wall

a TREMENDOUS flash
a HUGE boom
I said "the house was just struck by lightning"

at first we didn't see any damage
only the strong smell of ozone

downstairs the basement lights' breaker tripped (which we reset)
an electrical outlet mounted on the foundation wall was fried
and, the STRONG smell of ozone

later we discovered that our TV upstairs was fried
the doorbell didn't work
the hole in the foundation wall at the entrance to the house
and another one in the driveway next to my truck
6"x6" hole more than 1" deep
next to my truck
15' from the hole in the foundation wall

we discovered this hole after our landlord arrived and checked out the damage. We were standing next to the truck when he said "what's that noise? ... I think that it's coming from your truck."

he was correct. it sounded like a small fan--perhaps the cabin fan? everything else appeared to be OK. we started the truck; we turned it off. the only way to stop the noise was to disconnect the battery.

we weren't burned or hurt (not even a scratch)

my science and civil engineering education allows me to rationalize that the 8" thick poured concrete foundation wall was the reason that we weren't harmed.

but, my Christian education tells me that the lightning strike wasn't just a random "an act of God", but rather, a message from God.

love, don't hate
don't be afraid
obey
etc.

last Friday wasn't the first time that I've heard these messages from God. I've heard them many times before, including 50 years ago when I was just 20 years old

sometimes it takes a lightning bolt for me to get the message.

DSA: Divided States of America

"The first known publication of the phrase "United States of America" was in an anonymous essay in The Virginia Gazette newspaper in Williamsburg, Virginia, on April 6, 1776. ... In June 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the phrase "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" in all capitalized letters in the headline of his "original Rough draught" of the Declaration of Independence."

is it time for a name change? have the United States of America become the Divided States of America? yes.

why? for starters:
   - domestic crime and civil unrest, e.g. Charlottesville, Chicago, Baltimore, etc.
   - international meddling
   - 2016 election, 2014, 2012, 2010, etc.
   - president: 45th, 44th, 43rd, etc.
   - congress: 115th, 114th, 113th, etc.
   - our two party system of government
   - media
   - etc.

common denominators in our division are:
   - our two party system of government
   - the media

trump fights with democrats. trump even fights with other republicans, including members of his own staff. in congress republicans and democrats fight constantly. fighting republicans and democrats work their way all the way down to the state and local level. the 2016 election and our current civil unrest are a national disgrace.

it's time for change.

who do you trust?
   - someone who has values similar to yours?
   - someone who doesn't?
   - or political parties, financed by billionaire corporations and
     PACs

Here's how government is controlled in the US:

Soon the republican and democratic parties will die.
Nothing will be better for the United States of America.

as for the other common denominator, the media, the same principle applies. If we stop supporting extremist media, CNN, Fox News, and other sources of biased "news", including newspapers, other print media, radio, internet, etc., then biased "news" media and their "talking heads" will dry up and go away. along with getting rid of the republican and democratic parties, nothing will be better for the United States of America than ridding ourselves of extremist and divisive media.

Charlottesville

my comments to an article in The Daily Progress:
Virginians and others deeply grieve the murder of Heather Heyer of Charlottesville. our deepest condolences to her family. ... one would expect the charges against James Fields of Maumee, Ohio to grow beyond the initial charges. one would also expect Virginia to conduct rigorous investigations of the involvement of others (e.g., Kessler, Spencer, etc.) leading up to the murder of Ms. Heyer. ... regardless of the sentences of those charged and found guilty, they will never equal the loss of Ms. Heyer, her family, Charlottesville and Virginia.
Officials identify Charlottesville woman, 32, as victim of Saturday attack at 4th St | Local | dailyprogress.com

a comment to another article in The Daily Progress:
Robert Swift
Kesler shows that, like most bullies, he's weak and ineffectual. By refusing to relocate his Klan Koncave to a larger, safer facility he is directly complicit in the death of Ms Heyer. He can try to deflect the blame but he will never relieve himself of the responsibility for her murder. It is unfortunate that folks did not heed the city's call to simply ignore Kesler's and Spencer's show, but the responsibility for the violence and the tragic deaths fall on the ones who stirred up the hate and vitriol and brought it to C-ville.

an excerpt from an article in the National Review:
"...violent crime remains primarily a state responsibility. Field committed a heinous intentional homicide, a capital offense in Virginia. The attack resulted in vicious assaults on several others, also serious crimes. The Old Dominion, moreover, is among several states that added domestic-terrorism crimes to their penal codes following 9/11. Virginia’s terrorism provision is a potential death-penalty offense.

For prosecutors, the state crimes are the most straightforward to prove. They prescribe more than adequate punishments, and they do not require juries to wrestle with recondite federal jurisdictional elements — e.g., did the violence in question affect interstate commerce? Consequently, while the Justice Department should be offering Virginia all the assistance it can muster for a prosecution of Field (and any potential conspirators), it should content itself with this support role. Let the state prosecutors and police do the heavy lifting."

cut the crap

sometimes there's something to be said for straight talk when you're dealing with:
   - a maniacal, genocidal madman like kim jong un who threatens the US
and the free world by making nuclear weapons and intercontinental
     missiles to transport them
   - "the swamp", aka the washington establishment
   - democrat extremists who know no other way than their way
   - republican extremists who know no other way than their way
   - hostile media

after all, straight talk won the election.

here's some more straight talk:
look at the candidates in the 2016 election.
face it--our two party system of government is broken.
we need better candidates for public office.

who do you trust?

   - someone who doesn't?

Here's how government is controlled in the US:

history, diplomacy, korea, kim jong un, trump, deja vu

history matters.

why did Japan attack the US at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941?

answer: because diplomacy failed.

"Japan intended the attack as a preventive action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions they planned in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States."

"Some scholars consider the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 to have been the beginning of World War II. ... The war was the result of a decades-long Japanese imperialist policy to expand its influence politically and militarily in order to secure access to raw material reserves, food, and labor."

"The U.S. ceased oil exports to Japan in July 1941, following Japanese expansion into French Indochina after the Fall of France, in part because of new American restrictions on domestic oil consumption. ... On August 17, (1941) (US president Franklin) Roosevelt warned Japan that the U.S. was prepared to take steps against Japan if it attacked "neighboring countries".

"Japan and the U.S. engaged in negotiations during the course of 1941 in an effort to improve relations. During these negotiations, Japan offered to withdraw from most of China and Indochina when peace was made with the Nationalist government, adopt an independent interpretation of the Tripartite Pact, and not to discriminate in trade provided all other countries reciprocated. Washington rejected these proposals. Japanese Prime Minister Konoye then offered to meet with Roosevelt, but Roosevelt insisted on coming to an agreement before any meeting. The U.S. ambassador to Japan repeatedly urged Roosevelt to accept the meeting, warning that it was the only way to preserve the conciliatory Konoye government and peace in the Pacific. His recommendation was not acted upon. The Konoye government collapsed the following month when the Japanese military refused to agree to the withdrawal of all troops from China.
Japan's final proposal, on November 20, offered to withdraw their forces from southern Indochina and not to launch any attacks in Southeast Asia provided that the U.S., the UK, and the Netherlands ceased aiding China and lifted their sanctions against Japan. The American counter-proposal of November 26 (November 27 in Japan) (the Hull note) required Japan to evacuate all of China without conditions and conclude non-aggression pacts with Pacific powers. However the day before the Hull Note was delivered, on November 26 in Japan, the main Japanese attack fleet left port for Pearl Harbor."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Pearl_Harbor#Diplomatic_background

history's lesson is this:
sometimes diplomacy fails.
will madman kim jong un attack the USA with nuclear weapons?
maybe.
if he does, then it will be just another example in history when diplomacy failed.

can the 4th branch of government--the media--start WWIII?

did the founding fathers ever consider that the media could become the most powerful branch of government?

the nonstop media of the 21st century are pervasive; they have incredible power:
   - in domestic issues
   - in international issues
   - in cultural issues
   - in politics
   - in public opinion
media "reports" are often long on opinion and short on facts, failing to distinguish the critical differences between the two. it doesn't matter to the media. they fan their self absorption with disturbing 24-7 images and speculation.

the media create "scenarios", heroes, villains and victims. one media source's hero may be another's villain, and vice versa. the public react. the media love it. politicians react--they either love the attention or hate it, depending on if they're portrayed as hero or villain. the cycle continues.

the current media obsession with kim jong un and north korea has all the elements:
   - endless scenarios (never mind the facts)
   - villains (kim jong un, trump, china, russia, etc.)
   - victims (US, north korea, etc.)
   - heroes (trump, democrats, etc.).
the principals in this nuclear chicken, or "mine is bigger than yours", drama struggle to be seen as a hero rather than a villain. the media react. the public react. the principals react. the drama, fanned by the media, continues to cycle and escalate.

where will it all end?

maybe the media should just give it a rest, particularly the disturbing images shown over and over again of kim jong un, trump, icbms, north korean military parades, US military hardware, etc.

but then, that would be the responsible thing to do.
don't hold your breath.

virtue, truthfulness, liars, politics, government & the media

"The Founders thought that a free society could only flourish if its leaders are virtuous... the Founders understood that freedom would depend on citizens remembering that government derives its authority from people who consent to give it that authority, and that it must work to serve the common good, treating every citizen equally. Freedom depends on citizens who care enough about preserving it to really evaluate people who run for office, and to elect those who demonstrate wisdom, restraint, and personal virtue. Most of all, freedom depends on citizens having wisdom, courage and sense of justice necessary to take action when they see government overstepping its bounds."
